That fixed working height also means less bending than splitting kindling on the ground, which is worth considering if you are doing it every evening through winter.

High carbon steel holds its edge through repeated use and resists chipping better than cast alternatives, which matters on a tool that is hit rather than swung. It suits a wood burner, a fire pit or an open fire, and works indoors in a log store as readily as outside. Keep it away from children, mount it firmly into something solid, and check the fixings periodically. Choose a mounting point at a comfortable striking height for whoever uses it most, since that is harder to adjust once the fixings are in. A log store frame is usually solid enough on its own, but a loose fence panel or thin shed wall is not and should be reinforced first.
