White Glass Dome Pendant Light

Milky white glass is the quietest shade material there is. It hides the bulb entirely, spreads light evenly in every direction, and reads as a smooth solid form rather than a transparent one, which is why mid-century designers kept returning to it.

Three shade profiles, labelled A, B and C, move between a simple dome and a tiered stepped form. The dome is the most neutral and suits a kitchen or a hallway where the fixture should not draw attention. The tiered profiles have more presence and work better over a dining table or in a room with some period detailing to answer to. The stepped profiles are also the deeper ones, so check the drop you have before choosing between them.

The diffusion is what makes it usable at low ceiling heights: because no filament is visible, there is no glare from a seated position underneath it. Over a table, hang the bottom of the shade around 75 to 85 cm above the surface. A run of two or three along a kitchen island reads better than a single fitting. Installation should be carried out by a competent person, with the circuit isolated before work begins. Milky glass shows fingerprints less than clear glass but dulls with dust, so give it an occasional wipe with a dry cloth.
