Heat from a bulb above the candle melts the top layer of wax, so the fragrance releases without a flame, smoke or soot. The scent comes through more evenly than it does from a lit wick, because the whole surface warms at once rather than only the ring around the flame.
It also solves the tunnelling problem. A candle lit conventionally burns down the middle and leaves wax stuck up the sides; warmed from above it melts across the full width and burns to the bottom. On an expensive candle that difference is worth more than the warmer costs. It takes most jarred candles that fit under the shade; check the jar sits flat and clear of the bulb before switching on.
The form is a plain Nordic stem and shade, so it works as a small table lamp when there is no candle underneath it. White is the quieter of the two finishes and disappears against a pale wall; black is more graphic on a dark shelf or console. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, place it on a flat heat-tolerant surface, and never leave it running unattended or overnight. Let the wax cool fully before moving the jar.
