Urban Concrete Pendant Light

Cast cement with metal detailing and a perforated mesh section, so light escapes through the holes as well as from the open end. The concrete is left raw rather than sealed to a gloss, which is the whole point: the surface has grain and slight variation, and no two castings are quite identical.

Six models cover a wide range of proportions. Model A is tall and narrow at 6 cm across, right for a cluster of three at staggered heights over an island. Models B through D are the middle ground for a bedside or a single point over a small table. Models E and F are wider and shallower at 21 and 25 cm, which gives them enough spread to work as a single fixture above a dining table.

The cement body is sealed on the inside only, leaving the outer surface raw to the touch and cool, which is part of the material's appeal rather than a flaw to correct. A short length of braided flex connects each fixture to the ceiling rose and can be shortened on site to set the hanging height precisely. The weight of concrete means the fixing matters: use a ceiling rose rated for the load and have the installation carried out by a competent person, with the circuit isolated before work begins. The mesh throws a fine pattern onto the ceiling above, which is worth positioning for rather than ignoring.
