Woven rattan does something no manufactured diffuser can: it lets light through the gaps between the strands, so the wall around the fixture fills with a pattern of fine shadows. The shade becomes a projector rather than just a cover, and the effect changes as you move past it.

Each shade is handwoven, so the weave tension and the exact spacing vary slightly from one piece to the next. That is what stops a rattan light looking like a moulded imitation of one. The natural fibre also warms the colour of the light on its way through, which is why rattan reads as cosy even with an ordinary bulb behind it.

It suits rooms that already lean natural: linen, timber, plants, a coastal or boho scheme. A bedroom wall, a hallway or a lounge corner are the obvious homes, and it is at its best where there is a plain surface nearby for the shadows to land on. Dust settles in the weave, so an occasional going-over with a soft brush keeps the gaps open and the shadow pattern crisp rather than muddy. Keep it out of a damp bathroom, since rattan holds moisture. Installation should be carried out by a competent person.
