Handwoven Bamboo Pendant Lamp

Woven bamboo lets light through the gaps between the strands, so the shade projects a pattern onto the ceiling and walls around it rather than simply containing the bulb. That patterned spill is the reason to choose a woven shade over a solid one, and it changes as you move through the room.

Each shade is handwoven, so the weave tension and the exact spacing differ slightly from piece to piece. The natural fibre also warms the light passing through it, which is why bamboo and rattan read as cosy even under an ordinary bulb. Two profiles, A and B, differ in the depth and flare of the shade.

It suits dining rooms, cafes and rooms already leaning towards natural materials: linen, timber, plants, a coastal or boho scheme. Bamboo holds moisture, so keep it out of a bathroom or a covered outdoor area. A plain white liner sits inside the weave, which lifts the overall light output slightly so the glow does not read as too dim for everyday use. The weave is stitched at key points rather than left to hold its shape unsupported, which keeps the strands from loosening over years of use. Over a table, hang the bottom around 75 to 85 cm above the surface. Installation should be carried out by a competent person.
