Wooden Semi-Flush Ceiling Light

A shallow bowl turned from timber, mounted semi-flush so it sits just below the ceiling. The bowl shape is what softens the light: it bounces off the inside of the curve before reaching the room, so nothing arrives as a direct beam and the whole fixture glows rather than shining.

Wood is unusual in a ceiling fitting and it changes the temperature of a room noticeably. It warms the light on reflection and gives the ceiling something with grain and texture rather than another white disc. In a hallway or a bedroom with pale walls it is often the only warm element overhead. Timber also takes a knock better than glass, which is worth something on a landing or in a hallway where a ladder occasionally goes past.

Two finishes. Brown is the deeper of the pair and reads as more formal against dark furniture. Natural wood is lighter and calmer and sits comfortably in a Scandinavian or Japandi room. Both sit close enough to the ceiling for a standard room height. Installation should be carried out by a competent person, with the circuit isolated before work begins. Dust the bowl with a dry cloth now and then, as the upward curve collects it and a pale finish shows it.
