A square wall light is a harder shape to get right than a round one, because there is nowhere for a bad proportion to hide. This one keeps the frame shallow and the edges clean, so it sits close to the wall and reads as a piece of architecture rather than a fitting bolted on afterwards.
Light leaves the fixture up and down rather than straight out, which is what makes it usable at eye level. In a hallway that means a pair of soft pools along the wall instead of glare as you walk past. Over a sideboard or beside a bed it lifts the wall behind and leaves the middle of the room to other lighting. Two sizes let you scale it to the wall you are working with. The larger size suits a stairwell; the smaller works well in pairs beside a mirror.
Five finishes change the character more than the shape does. Gold warms a neutral wall and suits dining rooms and cafes. Black is the most graphic and holds its line against pale plaster. Coffee and grey sit quietly in a bedroom, and white all but disappears.
