Ribbed glass and polished brass is a pairing that has been used for a century because it works. The vertical ribbing catches light along each ridge, so the shade reads as a series of bright lines rather than a single flat surface, and the brass collar picks up the same warmth at the top.
Three glass colours behave very differently. Amber is the warmest and tints the light noticeably, which suits a bar, a snug or a dining room used mostly in the evening. Green is deeper and more saturated, and works as a colour decision in its own right. White diffuses most evenly and is the one to choose if the pendant needs to light a worktop as well as look good above it. Ribbed glass hides dust better than smooth glass, though it takes a soft brush rather than a cloth to get between the ridges.
The shade is sized for a single point above a kitchen island, a dining table or an entryway, and a run of two or three along an island reads better than one large fixture. Hang the bottom of the shade around 75 to 85 cm above a tabletop. Installation should be carried out by a competent person, with the circuit isolated before work begins.
