Turned from solid timber with the grain running continuously around the shade. Because the wood is solid rather than veneered, the figure differs from piece to piece and the edges can be left thin enough for light to glow faintly through them.

The form sits between Scandinavian and Japanese: a simple tapered shade, no hardware on show, and a finish that lets the material carry the whole design. That combination suits a dining table, a bedroom or a tea room, and it works particularly well in a space where wood already appears in the flooring or the furniture. Because the timber is solid rather than veneered, it can be lightly sanded and re-oiled if the surface dulls after several years, which a veneered shade cannot take. The tapered profile also means the shade sheds less shadow onto the ceiling than a straight-sided one, keeping the glow focused on the table below.

Two finishes with real difference between them. Walnut is deeper and more formal, and holds its own against darker furniture. Natural wood is lighter and calmer, and disappears more readily into a pale room. Over a table, hang the bottom of the shade around 75 to 85 cm above the surface. Installation should be carried out by a competent person, with the circuit isolated before work begins.
