Two layers of tinted glass, one inside the other, with a gap between them. The outer shade colours the light and the inner one diffuses it, so what leaves the fixture has both depth and softness rather than the single flat tone a one-layer shade produces.
That double construction is also what gives the pendant its presence when unlit. Looking at it, you see through one surface to another, and the two curves catch light at different angles. It is a mid-century idea and it works best where people sit under it long enough to notice: a dining table, a bar, a cafe counter.
Two tones. Smoke grey is the cooler and more restrained, and reads almost charcoal when switched off. Amber is the warmer and turns an evening room golden, which is the more traditional choice for a dining space. Both use an iron fixture in a matched finish. Hang the bottom around 75 to 85 cm above a tabletop. Installation should be carried out by a competent person. Tinted glass looks best with a warm bulb, as a cool source flattens the colour and makes the amber read muddy. Wipe the outer shade with a soft dry cloth, and expect a little dust to gather in the gap between the two layers.
