Iron and Glass Ceiling Light

A ribbed iron shade above a smooth glass globe. Two materials, two textures, and the contrast between them is the design: the iron carries the colour and the pattern, the glass carries the light and softens it before it reaches the room.

The globe diffuser is what makes it usable in a hallway. Because the glass hides the source completely, there is no bright point to catch your eye as you pass underneath, and the light falls evenly along the floor rather than in a hard circle. Mounted close to the ceiling, it clears head height in a narrow corridor.

Three colours with different characters. White is the most discreet and disappears into a pale ceiling. Green is the most decorative and works in a room that already has colour. Orange is the warmest and pushes the fixture towards retro, which suits an entryway with wood or terracotta in it. The ribbed iron shade is powder-coated in each of its finishes, holding colour evenly across the ridges rather than pooling in the grooves the way a sprayed finish sometimes does. Glass is opal rather than clear, so the bulb inside stays fully hidden and only its glow is visible from below. Installation should be carried out by a competent person, with the circuit isolated before work begins.
