Travertine and Wood Wall Lamp

Travertine is a porous stone with visible pitting and banding, and it is left hand-finished here rather than polished smooth. Paired with warm wood, it gives the fixture the slightly unfinished quality that wabi-sabi design is built around: texture accepted rather than corrected.

Because the stone is natural, the banding runs differently through every piece, so no two lamps are identical. Light catches in the surface pitting and along the grain of the wood, which means the fixture has something to look at during the day as well as after dark. Stone is porous, so keep it away from steam and lift any marks off with a barely damp cloth rather than a spray cleaner, which can sit in the pitting and dry pale.

Two finishes. Brown is the deeper of the pair and reads as more grounded against a pale wall. Wood is lighter and warmer and blends more readily into a Scandinavian or Japandi room. Both suit a bedside, a hallway or an accent wall where the fixture is meant to be a small sculptural object rather than a light source. Installation should be carried out by a competent person. The stone also carries some weight, so fix into a solid wall or use fixings rated for it.
