Coloured Glass Pendant Lamp

Coloured glass with iron fittings, in two tones that were chosen for atmosphere rather than brightness. Smoke grey is cool and moody, and reads almost black when unlit. Rust is warmer and more earthy, closer to burnt amber, and it warms the light noticeably as it passes through.

Because the glass is tinted rather than clear, this is a mood fixture first. It works beautifully over a dining table, a bar, a bedroom corner or in a cafe, where the point is the quality of the light rather than the quantity. In a kitchen it is best paired with brighter task lighting under the units rather than relied on alone.

The iron collar and suspension are finished to match rather than contrast, which keeps the shade as the only thing you notice. Hung in a run of two or three at even spacing along an island or a long table, it reads considerably better than as a single point. Hang the bottom around 75 to 85 cm above a tabletop. Tinted glass shows dust more readily than clear does, so wipe the shade with a dry cloth when you change the bulb; a clear filament lamp keeps the tone of the glass true. Installation should be carried out by a competent person.
