Brooks Wood and Brass Photo Frame

A photo frame is mostly about what it does not do. This one keeps the moulding narrow, the corners smooth and the detailing to a single brass-finish accent, so the frame stays out of the way of the picture inside it rather than competing with it for attention. Each frame opens from the back with a simple metal stand, so swapping a photo takes seconds, and the stand folds flat for posting as a gift.

Solid wood in two tones. Teak is the warmer and lighter of the two and suits a room with pale walls and natural textures. Black walnut is deeper and more formal, and holds its own on a dark shelf or against a painted wall. The brass corners catch a little light on both, which is what gives the frame its slightly vintage character without tipping into ornate.

Six sizes run from a small 9 x 13 cm for a bedside table up to 25 x 30 cm for a portrait that deserves the space. Freestanding rather than wall-mounted, so it can move between a mantelpiece, a desk and a shelf as a room changes. Mixing two or three sizes in the same finish along a shelf works better than matching everything, and gives a grouping some rhythm.
